Couples Therapy at The Family Treatment Service
The Family Treatment Service offers evidence based
couples therapy at our mental health clinic in London
Who can benefit from couples therapy?
Couples all have their own reasons for accessing therapy.
Although many people access therapy for conflict resolution or after a trauma such as infidelity or relationship breakdown, we advocate couple therapy for everyone.
It can be a very positive tool to strengthen healthy relationships and help to build strong communication skills as a couple.
Therapy can also help couples prepare for or adjust to big lifestage transitions, such as moving in together, getting married, starting a family and retirement.
If couples are at separation or divorce stage, sessions can be very helpful to discuss co-parenting amicably.
Our Approach
Our couples therapists at highly qualified Specialist Systemic Psychotherapists.
Systemic couple’s therapy aims to help understand each other's perspectives. We discuss differences in parenting styles, communication breakdowns and support each person to tell their story. We may think about inter-generational parenting patterns and influences from the family's wider contexts. Couples therapy gives everyone the chance to express and explore their feelings in a safe, non-judgemental environment.
What to expect
In couples therapy sessions we work together with you to look at patterns in relationships and interactions between the two of you. It can be helpful to think about interactions between partners as a multiplier- it can make situations better when it is understanding and caring but much worse when couples don’t understand each other. This is where the focus of the therapy lies.
We are likely to begin by talking about your family history in your families of origin and the dynamics present in your family when you were a child. This will help us to unpick and understand what you are bringing into your relationship today. Depending on your goals and the issues in hand the therapist can work in many different ways, but your collaboration in the therapy process is vital. That means we will also talk about how the sessions are going on a regular basis. We will not take “sides” and will allow you to work out your difficulties in a safe space.
